Task 3: Type Exploration and Application
LECTURES
All lectures have been completed in Task 1: Exercises 1& 2.INSTRUCTIONS
Task 3: Type Exploration and Application
1. Research, ideation and sketches
Proposal Ideas
Fig 1.1 Proposal, Week 10 (3/6/2022)
We were told to generate three project ideas based on our interests. Idea #3 was suggested to go forth with by Mr Vinod because it is always good to repurpose something.
2. Digitisation and exploration

Fig 1.3 Test Run LaserCutting, Week 11 (10/6/2022) |
I tested out the laser cut process as suggested by Mr. Vinod. This round, I discovered the sizing of my typeface has to be altered to mimic the actual bread clip size. I also found out that I am unable to cut directly on the actual bread clip. Hence, at this point I had to switch my initial plan and work with it.

During my test run, I realized I wanted an opaque material instead. I was recommended to use a white perspex sheet instead of the transparent version.
Digitise Progression

Upon showing the final digitised typeface, Mr Vinod suggested I include a version with dates/expiry dates like the actual bread clip on the typeface. This is to follow up on my glitch in this initial idea.

I used a cotton thread/twine to tie it up into a necklace/bracelet as a rough sample for the application. I also tested a sample of the typeface version to include engravement of the expiry date/price. Mr Vinod suggested I used oil paint to fill in the recesses of the engravement.

Fig 2.0 Process of bread clip inspired charms, Week 13 (24/6/2022) |
After lasercutting and engraving them, I spray painted the alphabets to display the colorful bread clips out there, using soft pastel colors. I also tested out using acrylics to fill in the the expiry dates, price. This was tricky to get hold of because leave it too long, it gets hard to remove and if we wipe it too early, its looks like its barely there.

Fig 2.1 Jewellery making process, Week 13 (24/6/2022) |
Due to time constraints, I've forgotten to take more process shots of jewellery making. I also didn't have time to fully explore how to tie the strings and add more charms. Therefore, all my jewellery applications adopted one alphabet charm from the typeface.
Final Task 3: Type Exploration and Application
Purpose: Repurposing bread clips but due to a glitch, it is an exploratory typeface based on bread clips.
Application: Jewellery charms and promotional poster

FEEDBACK
Week 10
General Feedback:
• We should make use of the resources we are paying for in the Design School such as lasercut. 3D printer etc.
• Expedite our process since we don't have much time left and show as much progression as possible next week.
Specific Feedback:
Good idea to repurpose something. I should consult with the campus's lasercut centre to help me go about this design process.
Week 11
General Feedback:
• Good design has a right amount of consistency and variation. Too much consistency makes it predictable.
• The main element is our typeface creation but we can still use a secondary typeface in our collaterals/output.
Specific Feedback:
• Ensure the size of the shapes and proportions is exactly as the lasercut device. Otherwise, it won't be correct. Measure the tag and check to see whether the curvatures etc. Run a test if I got the measurements correct and is the same as the actual bread clip. Once I've done that I can just continue developing the typeface and build according to specs.
Week 12
Week 12
General Feedback:
• Be creative in application, it will make or break our typeface.
• Ensure that the final outcome is downloadable and the link to the typeface is included at the end of the final compilation.
• Fill in the lowercase even if we didn't generate it so that it doesn't appear blank.
Specific Feedback:
I had a miscommunication with Mr. Vinod regarding my outcome of this final task. After his consultation, he suggested additions to my fonts:
• I have to really speed up my process. Focus on finishing developing the digital fonts. I am to include engravement of the bread clip details on the lasercut outcome. Test the perspex sheet with different colors if I want to. The engravement details should also be added when I am generating the typeface in FontLab.
Week 13
General Feedback:
• Create typographical ads, refer to the samples given on Facebook. Showcase your typeface and it has to be the main thing, not the visuals.
• Ensure all links and attachments are visible, formatting etc for the final compilation.
Specific Feedback:
• Typeface looks good, ensure that is generated in uppercase and lowercase so it won't be empty when it's typed out.
• Add color into the engravement, oil/acrylic paint so the color wil go into the recesses. Take better shots, factor in lighting, curate them better, almost fashion-like.
• In Fontlab, generate one with dates and one without.
• Ensure that I include in the blogpost the initial idea of repurposing actual bread clips, but the method to lasercut them wasn't possible. Mention what are the issues etc and the final outcome.
REFLECTION
Experience:
It's been an interesting experience, as I get to be pretty hands-on on a project (physically) from the start. I got to see a laser-cut and engravement process for the first time and learn the process behind it like file prepping and measurements. Since I was racing against time, a lot of processes didn't get taken along the way. For instance, lasercutting requires measurements through mm or it is advisable to use AutoCad. Otherwise, we are to save our AI filed into DXF files. Application-wise, I was able to put my crafty hat on and put together a 'do-it-yourself' handmade jewellery. This was time-consuming and I wish I had more time to be able to make the accessory more aesthetically pleasing. As mentioned in the posting, the initial idea to repurpose existing bread clips would have been great, but sometimes plans just don't work out. I found that we can't simply laser-cut on any material.
Observations:
The engravement outcome did not look as clear as to how I visualised it on the digital typeface. I also observed how the laser engravement did not carve out the outlined text as detailed as possible. A lot of observation was done on the actual bread clip too, such as the measurement and every curve/sharp end of the clip. In the process of my type application, I noticed that it wasn't easy to DIY jewellery, so the price that local sellers offer for handmade jewellery is justified!! I shall never complain about it. This took up my time more than I expected it to.
Findings:
I learned the hard way that time management is crucial in this task. There was insufficient time for me to properly explore and develop this task on top of managing my other modules. As always, observation is key. Though it took the longest time, I found that prepping your font from Adobe Illustrator eased the process of generating it in FontLab. For instance, keeping the anchor points in check so lesser time is spent amending them. I realised I mentioned time a lot in this reflection...(ahhh need more TIME!)
