Final Project: Abstract Motion

INSTRUCTIONS

FINAL PROJECT

For the final project, we are to create a theme-based abstract motion graphic video. We can use 3D/2D, mixed media, or experimental visual output.

Idea/Concept
The theme that I would like to highlight is Mental Illness and I am focusing specifically on OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), what it's like for them and the stigma that they face. This in hopes would raise awareness and show the public what they feel like struggling with this on top of facing discrimination.

So I wanted to bring the topic in a different way but with the limited time I had, I decided to use shapes to represent them.

Style Frames

Using shapes to represent - how this illness is characterized with the presence of obsession and compulsion. Obsessed with things being in order or compulsion of repetitive behaviour (switching the light switch for example)

Audio Source

I searched up videos of people that struggle with this to use as an audio of what they feel on a daily basis.

Based on all three videos, I wanted to highlight that OCD and perfectionism are two different things. So I focus on the intrusive thoughts that they go through, as well as, capturing the compulsive actions that comes together.

Technical Processes

Stop Motion

I printed out a photo of a woman and crumpled it. This is to represent that intrusive thoughts is also a form of OCD. Then I animated it open/closing.

Photoshop
Cropping/Removing Background

These are stock images I compiled for my graphical elements.

Figure 7 Stock Photos

I cropped these texture backgrounds into the shape of a person's head as to represent what goes on in their minds.

Compulsion - This was one of the experiences that they would check if they have switched on their lights up to 5 times before actually leaving the house.

I cropped and edited the light switch on photoshop - A photo taken of one of my switches at home since it has a vintage feel to it.

This was the initial stock photo but I didn't really like it.

Creating style frames
This was in hopes to save time as I import from Photoshop to After Effects

Once I had all the graphics ready, I put them into AE to animate.

After Effects

Attempt 01 - WIPs
- Basic Transform Movements

Using shapes to represent things in order or 'perfect'.

- Animate Paths - Range Selector

- Scale In/Out

Based on feedback, there wasn't any focal point and I can animate more things. So I used typography and refined the existing work I did in Attempt 01.

Attempt 02 - WIPs

Video and Audio Compilation

All that's left is to compile everything. I arranged the flow of the animation here and inserted the transitions accordingly. There wasn't much to do as I have done more of the animating in AE.  It was more work on audio.

Audio Effects
I manipulated the audio to soften it as well as to merge together with the audio seamlessly. It sounds like a telephone recording and I think I preferred that effect. I also pitch shift it to make it seem like different people were talking.

FEEDBACK

Week 13

Specific Feedback: The sound used really enhanced the whole concept. Anyway, your current progress can be assumed as the first layer as the background, next step is you can create more subjects to be animated and as the main focus point. Keep on exploring and find more references for your inspiration. Keep it up Zetie!

REFLECTIONS

This whole process was such a rollercoaster. I had to squeeze this in between of other modules so hence there was quite a change in the final output. All because I didn't have initial proper planning. I believe that I have executed it well but of course, there is always room for improvement and always new things to learn when motion design comes into play.
