1. Tasks Delegation

Each of us was assigned to our respective subtopic. Moving forward, we divided ourselves into a group of 3 illustrators and 3 animators.

2. Sketches/Style Frames/Moodboard
The first task is developing a moodboard for our motion graphics video. We used Canva so everyone can put in their ideas for the look and feel of the final output. Then, we compiled the scenes we felt were challenging based on the script.

At this point, all of us weren't sure of the art direction we were going for. However, we all agreed that it would be colorful graphics and no line art. Hence, I created sample style frames since I had one of the challenging scenes, which is Puberty.

Realistic human illustrations are not one of my strengths. Hence, I went for a more abstract style for the sample style frame for Mr. Martin's viewing.

3. Script Breakdown

Fig 1.3 Script Breakdown, Week 3-Week 4 (20/2-27/2)

Each of us broke down our assigned parts sentence by sentence by listening to the audio. This planning helps us to keep our timing in check for illustrating and animating later on.

4. Storyboarding

Fig 1.4 Storyboard Frames 1 - 2, Week 4 (27/2/2022)

I am assigned to subtopics - Welcome, Introduction and Puberty. These are my storyboard sketches for these frames. They are rough hand-drawn sketches but the general idea of each frame is included.

The rest of the storyboard sketches can be seen here.

5. Animatics
(Final compilation and editing executed by me)

We are to submit a rough animatic for Mr. Martin's viewing. This is to show the direction of our motion graphic video. Hence, we used back our storyboard and added simple graphics to show the flow of the video.

6. Illustration

Some changes were made from the previous color scheme. (Refer Fig 1.1) The illustrators decided to change the colors of the characters and added more colors.

7. Animation WIP

My assigned frames are from Frame 1 to 5. Each animator is also in charge of the SFX of their assigned frames. The challenging part of animating is ensuring the files are organized in their own respective layers. I think I spent more time organizing the files than animating each frame.

Tips I discovered to resolve this: Ensure layers are unlocked, and layers have to be ungrouped into their own paths. Sometimes, no compound path either.

Feedback from the team:

1. Blurry footage

Fig 2.1 Blurry Scene

I learned that 'Continously Rasterize' is a useful tool when working with vector files in After Effects. However, this scene was still blurry after doing so and I re-animated the scene.

2. Suggestions to revise animation

(All are resolved in the final animation)

FEEDBACK

Week 4
Specific Feedback:

- remove 15 mins scene
- naked figure for frame 2 & 3
- maybe make wet dream scene more whimsical(?)

Week 7
General Feedback:

Mr. Martin: "we are definitely looking at good work, constantly produce good work not so much to worry, just want to suggest submission date..."

REFLECTIONS

This project has been a smooth journey despite our delay in producing digital illustrations and showing our progression as expected. We were all struggling with time management, juggling our individual works, as well as, Intercultural Design. Despite all that, the group worked effectively and we managed to submit on time. All group members participated actively, giving each other feedback, remarks and hence, producing a great video! Teamwork really makes the dream work and I am blessed to be able to work in a good team.

There was minimal pressure but my group leader is definitely quite observant. She notices every glitch in the animation and ensures the quality of each output. There was definitely pressure for me to animate as I am in charge of bringing the illustrators' work to come to life! My biggest struggle is preparing the graphics for After Effects as it was a nightmare. However, I have learned to be more observant in terms of checking the graphics color mode and the output quality after rendering. This I must work on to be a better motion graphic artist.
