Final Project: Research & Reflect

LECTURES

Week 6
Final Project Briefing
(Mr. Asrizal)
  • Reevaluate ideas and message we intend to convey
  • Finalize the methods - "What is the best medium for us to communicate the message to our audience?"
  • No limitations physical/digital
  • Include rationale of each particular output /no word limit
(Supervisor: Ms. Jinchi)
Final PPT format:
  • Recap of the research problem
  • Recap of RO & RQ
  • Recap of the proposed ideas
  • Data collection summary
  • Key findings from data collection - 'What can we deduce from the findings?'
  • Confirmation of final ideas - 'What has led to confirming our final ideas?'
  • Final design outcome
  • Final reflection
Things we need to research:
  • Diff interactive poster, its medium, interesting things of wat ppl have done
  • Diff virtual game cards
  • Diff AR filters
Rationale:
  • 200 words or more (depending on your topic)
  • Explain the design outcome
  • Explain the chosen color scheme, does it relate back to the culture?
  • Does it reach to TA (target audience)
  • Explain basically everything

Reflection:
  • Compile key points from each member for one whole final reflection to be put into the final presentation.
  • Individual blog reflection, can be longer and more detailed.

Week 7

Lectures completed. Focus on completing our design outcome.

INSTRUCTIONS

Final Project

Week 6 Progression
Develop Research on Design Outcome

I developed my research on the current AR filters inspired by Day of the Dead. There were many existing filters but none have created a quiz-style AR filter of Day of the Dead, which is our proposed solution.

Fig 1.1 Quiz style AR filter on Instagram

I tested some AR filters on Instagram to get the look and feel of them. So I could take notes of what works and what doesn't, so my partner Wanda can execute them. I felt this was a good example of a quiz-style filter that we can implement into ours.

Rationale for Instagram Story AR Filter

We are to write a rationale for each of our output. I was assigned to the AR filter and hence, explained on the visual of it.

Compilation True/False Questions

I opened up google docs for the team to share ideas on the true/false questions. We listed out the true/false questions to be used for the game cards, as well as, the AR filter.

Meeting (18/2)
This meeting with Dr. Jinchi helped us to clarify our goals and objectives, as well as, guidelines to present our work with a better flow. She also gave suggestions on how we could effectively showcase our design outcomes.

Week 8 Progression
There were technical difficulties to create the AR filter. The filter could not display questions in a loop and randomized manner. Hence, we had an emergency meeting with Ms. Jinchi.

Emergency Meeting (23/2) Notes:

1. Create an Infographic layout (A3 size)
  • Include some information of the filter design
  • List of questions for the filter
  • Screenshot of one of us using the filter
  • Keep in mind the design overall needs to reflect back to our DOD style and concept

2. Reflection
Include a screenshot of Wanda’s trial filter & talk about technical glitches.

3. Provide link in full detailed PDF
Include a disclaimer there is technical issues written in fine print (small text)

4. For presentation
Ensure we answer why design is important and why it relates back to our concept

Design Outcome - AR Filter Issues

For the AR filter, my partner Wanda faced technical glitches to create the filter on Spark AR. Despite various tutorials on Youtube and the Spark AR forum, there was no solution to our problem.

Issues:
- True/False Buttons positioned wrongly
-Questions do not appear

As shown below, the icons for true and false could not be positioned correctly. Instead, they are slightly above the buttons.

Fig 1.7 Wanda facing a technical error on Spark AR

Despite the issues, she managed to resolve them fairly. The filter is not able to work smoothly and the questions do not randomize and automatically appears by its own. Hence, it is not perfect like how we planned it. The important part is we managed to show how the idea works and of its importance to have this Day of the Dead filter as our solution.

As mentioned, the technical glitch still occurs occasionally - for example, the asset will go missing during the game. (Refer GIF below)

We figured out the flow of the filter after testing it a few times.*Tap twice for questions to disappear. Tap twice to display the next question. (Please refer to the linked demo video)

FEEDBACK

All feedback has been included in the meeting notes.

REFLECTIONS

Throughout this module, I felt like it was an extension of Design Research, but with a design output. With no proper research, our visualizations would not be executed right. This is clearly shown during our technical issue in executing the Instagram Story AR filter. It brings me back to Data Collection and thinking we have already done extensive research..but I guess it wasn't enough! Perhaps, this phase of the project could be divided into proposal and ideation(?) Submission time squeezed in between the Lunar New Year holidays did not help either.

To be honest, I am disappointed with myself for not being a better team member to execute this phase of the project. Thinking my partner would have no issue since she has experience in using the software put me in a comfortable spot. It made me extra confident in not preparing a backup plan, and just focusing on my assigned task. Despite the issue being (sort of) resolved, this opened my eyes to always being prepared in times of crisis.

As for the visual outcomes, I am really happy with what the team has pulled off. There are things that could have been executed better (like the filter), but with the timeframe that we have... I think it is best at the moment. The team showed great participation and everyone managed to complete their assigned tasks. Great teamwork really makes a difference and I am glad to be in a group with this group of people.

Overall this module was a great experience. Just as I have mentioned in the group reflection, there are many layers to culture, and all that layers underneath all interlock. I have learned that just because I know of the superficial aspects of a culture, it doesn't mean that I have fully known all about that culture. Each culture has its own sub-culture that comes into play. Since this module was executed online, digital netnography was all we could afford. Though it may seem easy, there's a lot of information to filter out. Especially when one is trying their best to represent ideas for another culture that isn't their own. This makes me extra cautious in fact-checking and writing as I ensure that I run it through the team members and Dr. Jinchi.
