LECTURES

Week 1:

Dr. Hayati gave us a briefing on what is expected of us on the dissertation.

Week 1: Lecture Notes

Week 1: Supplementary Notes

Week 2:

This week, we are to write a literature review. Prior to this, we should create a literature matrix spreadsheet to synthesise the themes which will help expand our Section 5: Discussion later on.

Week 2: Lecture Notes

Week 2: Supplementary Notes

Week 3:

This week, we are to write the Methodology section 3 as part of the Draft Dissertation document. This can be referred to from our primary data in Design Research Methodology.

Week 3: Lecture Notes

Week 3: Supplementary Notes

Weeks 4 and 5:

Similarly, we are to write the  Results Analysis and Discussion sections 4 & 5. This can also be referred to from our findings in Design Research Methodology with further expansion.

Week 4/5: Lecture Notes

Week 4/5: Supplementary Notes

Week 6:

No lectures due to Eid holidays.

Week 7:

Supposedly, Dr Hayati uploaded these notes in week 6 but there was a technical issue from her side. The assignment is coming towards the final sections now. In these slides, we learn to write on Conclusion, Introduction, and Abstract.

Week 7: Supplementary Notes

Week 7: Lecture Notes

FEEDBACK

Week 1
General Feedback:

  • Ensure that we are present to key in our attendance codes even after completing our individual tutorials.
  • Try not to be missing in action as this module requires continuous progression on a weekly basis.
  • Lecturers have different Microsoft Teams mode, so ensure that any communications use Dr. Hayati’s gmail that is stated in the MIB.
  • The initial research we did previously is a feeder to our dissertation. We have to revisit the materials and can update them if necessary.
Week 2
Specific Feedback:

Fully understand the articles that I am reviewing in order to identify the themes. Without understanding, I won’t be able to identify the themes in the literature review. This will also affect me in my discussion in the dissertation later on.

Week 3
Specific Feedback:

  • Ensure that I upload progression on my Google Drive and drag my word document into Google Docs.
  • Refer to Matrix to compare and contrast and reflect on my sub-headers. The paragraphs are too short in my literature review, allow myself to be more robust and critically argue or synthesise my points.
  • Refer to Page 2 of the ‘Literature Review’ notes and use the table as a reference to be more critical and analytical when doing my review.
  • Always keep the progress and reflection sheet updated to help keep us on track.
  • For Section 3, my observational studies is considered a pilot study.
There is no perfect draft, the process will go through the continuous back and forth.

Week 4
General Feedback:
  • It’s important we share and upload our progression in Google Drive on a weekly basis.
  • A dissertation is about critical reasoning/argument that makes us more analytical.
  • The materials provided in Google Classroom are only the basis because there isn't a 'right' formula that applies to everyone. There are different research objectives, intention, participants and findings.
Specific Feedback:
  • I jumped quickly into my research design - explain further the overview intro of the methodology before going in-depth into research design.
  • Pilot Study is not a finding, it is an initial stage of the data procedure. - It’s a sub-section after the survey.
  • Section 3 is all about describing why I conducted/designed the instrument in such a way?
  • For Section 4, the open-ended questions in my survey should be treated as a qualitative method.
  • A good dissertation has a description in each sentence/paragraph that has the element of synthesising, criticising, reasoning and argumentative.

Week 5
Specific Feedback:
  • Always correlate my points from the earlier section to let the reader feel me.
  • In the discussion section, I should bring together findings from the literature review and primary data. It will also discuss what I have discovered in the basis to meet my research objectives with my research question.
  • When correlating, go straight into the specific section and page it is from. This is especially important when direct quotations are involved.
  • Bring any tables/figures you have included in Section 4 to Section 5 of the discussion. As the reader needs to see the RO/RQ clearer.

Week 6
No classes due to Eid holidays.

Week 7
General Feedback:
  • Important to know our keywords when constructing the conceptual framework.
  • The arrows in the diagram indicate the flow of the research and reflect the research design framework.
  • It gives a better affirmation of what the research is about before the reader proceeds to Section 2.
  • The researcher has to decide which manner is more effective (Bottom-up or Left-Right)
  • Ultimate goal is to ensure that other people can understand our research.
  • Use the Roman page for sections prior to Section 1.0

Specific Feedback:
  • Indicate to which Research Objective does the sub-section in Section 5 matches to ease the readers.
  • Conclude from earlier sections as well.
  • Referring to the notes in writing an abstract, it’s sufficient to have 1 to 2 lines in each component.
  • Add 5 keywords max, just below the abstract.
