This is an exploratory work on a typeface. Initially, the proposed idea was to repurpose actual bread clips and cut them into alphabets, to be reused or repurposed. However, due to technical issues, such as laser-cutting and materials, I had to change plans. Therefore,  I developed a typeface inspired by the shape of a bread clip and applied them to handmade macrame jewellery charms.

REFLECTION

Experience:

Advanced Typography seemed to have more freedom than Typography. Typography in general took some time to grow on me because it felt very strict at first. I was expecting even more rules this semester, but Advanced Typography was actually better, and the tasks gave me more freedom and independence. Type design tasks are not my stronger suit, and there were a lot of them in this module. I find making layouts/arranging type more enjoyable. Overall, it was a very positive experience and I also learned new skills like creating jewellery.

Observations:

I noticed that I take a long time to generate ideas for type design. I much prefer doing layouts such as the typographic systems. Perhaps, the software to generate the font deters my enthusiasm to develop typefaces. Furthermore, I've discovered that it takes resilience to produce work and determination to ensure the typeface strokes/serifs/widths - all the little details. Although I preferred Advanced Typography to Typography, there were more burned-out moments.

Findings:

I learned more about branding or collateral work process, words such as 'simulations' when all these while they were just mockups to me lol. When designing a type/logo for a brand identity, there are many factors to consider, such as what you're portraying, your intentions, and the design's effectiveness. This reflected in my work in Task 2 that is just fairly good. The typographic systems lesson was most fun and useful to me. They were difficult at first, but they became more enjoyable to experiment with and helped spark new ideas. I also got reminded from Typography of how time-consuming, brain-damaging, and unforgiving kerning can be. The software itself was not helpful at all, and it would quit unexpectedly. The only thing that prevents me from doing Typography is that all letters must be paired together and kerned individually.
