REFLECTIONS

Experience:
This typography module has taught me a lot of things and shaped me to become a better designer. There is no denying that this module made me doubt myself and have breakdowns just because I received poor feedback with no extra explanation from Mr. Vinod. It took me some time to process and analyze why he did what he did. My favorite tasks would be designing my own font and creating a sticker because I get to work with colors. That was a really fun process although I did not get to resolve the animation issues. I hope Mr. Vinod can find a way to provide a better guide to create animated Telegram stickers just like he provided for FontLab for future Typography students.

The workload given is heavier (technically) than my other modules but I am glad that they have arranged it in a way then it gets easier as the semester passes by. Although it gets easier, each task still requires a set amount of time to explore and execute it well. I am only taking another core module this semester, but I am already feeling the stress. I hope to be even better at managing my time in my next module with Mr. Vinod, in Advanced Typography as that semester will be a challenging one for me since I will be taking my specialized subjects with it.

Observations:
Typography has unintentionally changed the way I see type, and type is everywhere! I'll judge the typefaces that are used in commercials, banner adverts that I see on the road, my skincare packaging and start to criticize them in my head. Good typography requires so much thought and careful consideration so this module definitely requires us to be meticulous and detailed. After completing all the assigned tasks, I gained a better sensibility and appreciation for typography. Although, it can get quite challenging when you can't unsee the bad typography that you come across with.

Findings:
I realized my previous institution somehow made me treat feedback sessions as more of agency-client approval and rejection thing so I was just seeking approval every time. It took a toll on me when Mr. Vinod gave me my first rejection (LOL) and everything went haywire. Looking back, I noticed that I have become more independent in making decisive decisions about my designs. I make sure to look through my final output of designs and scrutinize them myself before Mr. Vinod and Mr. Charles do.

Aside from that, I am able to identify and compare good and bad typefaces, as well as choose appropriate typefaces and express them well in my design. I also understand why the typographic rules are there. Some of them have resonated with me when designing. For example, kerning is now my best friend and the amount of space around each word has as much to do with legibility as the type size itself. I hope to continuously apply these observational and critical skills in the rest of my modules and my journey as an aspiring motion graphic artist.
